The Buffalo Bills cut two of their three quarterbacks, former Georgia Bulldogs Jake Fromm and Davis Webb, on Monday. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, it’s expected that the Bills will now turn to veteran starter Nathan Peterman, who was signed to replace Tyrod Taylor at quarterback.
There has been a lot of news about the Buffalo Bills cutting 2 quarterbacks. The Bills cut their number one QB Tyrod Taylor, who still is trying to get a new contract. The Bills also cut the number 2 QB Davis Webb. Both players were drafted by the Bills in the 5th and 6th round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
The Buffalo Bills cut 2 quarterbacks in the same day, both on the same day. What the heck is going on?
Getty Jake Fromm (L) and Davis Webb (R) were removed from the Buffalo Bills’ 2021 roster.
The Buffalo Bills looked to be in a fight for the last quarterback position on the depth chart behind starter Josh Allen and backup Mitchell Trubisky throughout the preseason. While head coach Sean McDermott usually only retains two quarterbacks on the roster, retaining either Jake Fromm or Davis Webb looked not only possible, but also likely, as COVID-19 variations continue to rise.
However, neither Fromm, a fifth-round draft selection in 2020, nor Davis, a 2017 third-round pick who joined Buffalo in 2019 after being released by the New York Jets, made the cut when the Bills revealed their first 53-man roster on Tuesday.

After COVID-19 health and safety standards postponed the preseason, Fromm never got to take a snap last season. Instead, the Bills decided to keep the UC Berkley graduate isolated from the rest of the squad in case a COVID-19 epidemic wiped out others ahead of him on the depth chart.
Both Fromm and Webb, who had spent the previous two years on the practice squad, were vying for the backup quarterback job. Webb entered the game in the second quarter of the Bills’ preseason game against the Detroit Lions, finishing 11-for-16 for 90 yards and orchestrating a 15-play, 83-yard drive that culminated with a 6-yard touchdown throw to Devin Singletary.
During the third and fourth quarters, Fromm took over as quarterback. The University of Georgia graduate threw for 65 yards on 8-of-13 passing. On 4th-and-10 on the last drive, Fromm threw a 42-yard throw to rookie Marquez Stevenson, putting the Bills in position for the game-winning field goal.
Trubisky will only be in Buffalo for a year, according to reports.
Mitchell Trubisky was a sought-after free agent, according to Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane, but he chose to sign with Buffalo for a “reboot” alongside Brian Daboll and Josh Allen.

Another argument for retaining either Fromm, 23, or Webb, 26, on the depth chart is that Trubisky’s time with the Bills isn’t going to be lengthy. The former Chicago Bears quarterback agreed to a one-year deal with Buffalo and will not be returning next season.
In a March interview with SiriusXM NFL radio, general manager Brandon Beane said that they were trying to help develop Trubisky so that he might return to a starting position with another club in 2022. Trubisky showed his value as QB2 against his old club in the Bills’ second preseason game.
The former No. 2 overall selection threw for 220 yards and a score on 20 of 28 passing attempts. According to CBS Sports, Trubisky stated of the “revenge” game against the Bears, “I knew people would be talking about it and hype it up, but it was just important for me to come out here and do my job and show my teammates that I could play well.”

With Trubisky wanting to return to his starting position as a quarterback in the future and the Bills coaching staff being aware of his plans, it makes sense for Buffalo to retain either Fromm or Davis on the practice squad as insurance.
Allen is the NFL’s No. 10 overall player for the 2021 season.
The NFL revealed the remainder of the preseason rankings after Allen’s outstanding performance on Saturday, and the Bills quarterback was ranked No. 10 overall.
While many would argue that Allen should be rated higher, it’s a significant improvement from last year’s rankings, when he was named No. 87 in the NFL’s Top 100.
Allen received another outstanding, though bizarre, new NFL rating when the New England Patriots released Cam Newton on August 31. Allen, who is 25 years old, is the AFC East’s oldest and longest-serving quarterback.
