Georgia is in the middle of a contentious debate about how to become more competitive with other Southern states when it comes to attracting business. If Perdue moves forward, he will likely emerge as both an ally and critic for Kemp’s plan, given that his own policies have been called “radical” by some party members.

The “father-son shootout” is a report that former U.S. Sen. Perdue is considering challenging GA Gov. Kemp in the GOP primary.

Until earlier this year, David Perdue was a member of the United States Senate. He was voted out of Georgia’s House of Representatives. He changed his mind after seeming to be interested in Georgia’s second Senate seat for a short time.

Georgia’s governor, Brian Kemp, was elected in 2018. With the support of then-US President Donald Trump at the time. That altered after Trump’s defeat in Georgia, as well as the presidential election in general, in 2020. Kemp, like other Republican elected officials in the state, has refused to back up Trump’s baseless charges of voting fraud.

Trump immediately turned on Kemp, paving the way for a tumultuous gubernatorial race in Georgia in 2022.

Perdue is allegedly setting the basis for a primary challenge against Kemp.

According to WSB-TV, David Perdue is contemplating running for governor of Georgia. If he runs for governor in the Republican primary, he will face incumbent Brian Kemp.

According to The Hill, if Perdue formally joins the race, he will almost certainly earn Trump’s support. Several of Trump’s friends have already backed a different Republican primary contender. Vernon Jones, a former State Representative, is the person in question. Who was a Democrat till the end of last year?

Perdue was a high-ranking corporate executive before entering politics.

David Sr., his father, was a Democratic elected politician in Houston County, Georgia, not far from Macon. He joined the management consulting company Kurt Salmon after graduating from Georgia Institute of Technology. There would be a slew of job openings with other firms as a result. Sara Lee Corporation’s senior vice president for Asia operations, for example.

Haggar Clothing’s senior vice president of operations follows.

Perdue eventually accepted a similar role at Reebook. He would ascend through the ranks of the corporation to become its president and CEO. He went on to become CEO of Pillowtex Corporation and then Dollar General.

Following his departure from Dollar General, Perdue pursued a number of other business ventures.

His first cousin, then-Governor Sonny Perdue, named him to the Georgia Ports Authority directorship. In the Trump administration, Sonny Perdue would go on to become the United States Secretary of Agriculture.

In 2014, David Perdue was elected to the United States Senate. Documentarian Jon Ossof, a Democrat, beat him in a 2021 runoff for re-election.

Kemp’s professional journey has a now-ironic twist.

Brian Kemp was elected to the Georgia State Senate for the first time. In 2006, he ran for Georgia agricultural commissioner but lost to a Republican candidate. Gary Black, the eventual general election winner, defeated him.

Sonny Perdue, David Perdue’s cousin, selected Kemp as Georgia’s secretary of state in 2010.

Later following year, Kemp was re-elected in his own right, and in 2014, he was re-elected again.

Kemp was elected governor four years later. The victory, however, was not without dispute. Kemp’s responsibilities as Secretary of State included monitoring elections. He did not quit or recuse himself from the gubernatorial election process. As a result, there has been suspicion about potential conflicts of interest, as well as charges of voting suppression.
