Emma Raducanu describes reaching the US Open semi-finals and being one of the last few players in the locker room as a “strange sensation.”
On Thursday, the 18-year-old British player will face Maria Sakkari, the 17th seed from Greece.
In about 21:00 local time, the two will face off at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York (02:00 BST, Friday).
“I didn’t expect to be here. But now I am, and I can’t wait to go out there “Raducanu said.
Raducanu has defied expectations by becoming the first qualifier to reach the US Open last four in her maiden overseas Grand Slam – and just her fourth tour-level tournament.
The Kent youngster has yet to lose a set in her eight matches at Flushing Meadows, having advanced through three qualifying matches to reach the main draw.
The most recent victory came on Wednesday over Swiss 11th seed Belinda Bencic, setting up a last-four match with Sakkari, who also reached the semi-finals of the French Open in June.
The fewer players remaining in the competition, Raducanu said, the “easier it is to obtain a practice court at a reasonable hour.”
“It’s strange to be in the semi-finals with so few players remaining in the competition,” she remarked, “and I haven’t completely gotten my mind around it.”
“I am, nevertheless, quite thrilled.”
Sakkari remarked after defeating Czech fourth seed Karolina Pliskova in the quarterfinals: “Emma is on a roll, but I believe in myself and my game. I have a lot of faith in myself.”
Raducanu is eager to shine under the bright lights of New York.
Raducanu has continuing to break new ground at Flushing Meadows, and she will have another another first when she performs in the night session on Ashe.
Playing under the lights on the world’s largest tennis court, with a capacity of almost 24,000, is an unforgettable experience.

There is always a lot of background noise in a crackling environment with enthusiastic supporters enjoying the mid-match entertainment, which typically includes music, dancing fans, celebrities being presented to the audience, and ‘Kiss Cam’ during the changeovers.
“This will be my first night match here in New York, and I’m looking forward to it,” Raducanu remarked.
“I have a little more time to recuperate and prepare as much as possible since I’m playing in the evening, so we’ll see what happens.”
Raducanu has played both of her day session matches on Ashe.
Raducanu, who seems relaxed, is climbing the ranks.
Raducanu has always been regarded as a potential star by those who know her, but no one could have anticipated her ease in advancing through the main draw of the US Open.
She hasn’t even had to go to a tie-break, having only lost 22 games in the main draw against her five opponents.
If Raducanu defeats Bencic, she will break into the world’s top 50, passing Johanna Konta and Heather Watson to become the British women’s number one.
With one more win, she would break into the top 30 in the world, surpassing American veteran Serena Williams, who was forced to withdraw from this year’s US Open due to injury.

Reaching the last four also ensures a prize pool of $675,000 (£490,000). Raducanu had previously earned $303,376 (£220,380) in her career, despite having only played three tour-level tournaments prior to the US Open, including a last-16 performance at Wimbledon.
Whatever happens on Thursday at Flushing Meadows, British doubles player Naomi Broady believes Raducanu will become a long-term star in British tennis.
“It’s really thrilling. Everyone may tell us to calm down because we’ve seen it before and nothing good has come of it, but given what we’ve seen so far in this race, let us live in the moment of excitement “Broady said she texted Raducanu a few hours before the quarter-final on Wednesday.
“I wasn’t sure whether she’d reply since I assumed she’d switched off her phone.”
“She was completely at ease; it was a very regular discussion.”
“You’d never guess she was on her way to her first Grand Slam quarter-final.”
